N.Y.S. COVID Rent Relief Subsidy Calculator. Application Deadline Extended to August 6th

THE APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO AUGUST 6TH, 2020.

The COVID Rent Relief Program is a temporary rent relief program. You can apply online or mail in a paper application that must be postmarked by August 6th.

This is a one-time grant that goes directly to your landlord. It will cover the difference between the percent of your income you paid toward rent before the COVID-19 crisis and the percent of income you pay now. It can cover rent from April through July. If you already paid your rent for this time period, you can still apply. Whatever subsidy you are eligible for will be applied towards future rent.

To be eligible, at least one household member must be a US citizen or other eligible immigration status. You must also meet income requirements based on household size and county where you live.  The state will let you know for how much you have been approved, and when the amount has been sent to your landlord.

Use this calculator to determine if you are eligible and what your estimated subsidy could be.

OTHER RELIEF PROGRAMS

New York State has said they will prioritize people with the greatest need. This means that it is likely that not everyone who applies will receive assistance.  If you are not eligible for the COVID Rent Relief Program or do not receive it after you apply, you may be eligible for an emergency grant called the One Shot Deal that is administered by HRA. You can call 311 or go to www.nyc.gov/accesshra to apply. You may be eligible if:

  • Back rent would prevent your eviction

  • Payment is needed to maintain or restore utility service(s)

  • If you must move, you may be eligible for help with moving expenses, security deposit voucher, broker’s fees, or temporary storage for furniture and personal belongings

Other eligibility criteria is not advertised because they are decided on a case-by-case basis, but generally there must be a reason that has prevented you from paying the unexpected expense and you must be able to show how you will pay the expense moving forward. You may have to pay back the grant through regular monthly payments.
