Senate Democrats Push New MTA Bailout Plan
Wednesday, 22 April 2009 09:41

April 22, 2009

By: NY1 News Democrats in the State Senate are vowing to vote on a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bailout plan as early as next week. The latest proposal does not include new bridge tolls, but does include a one-dollar-per-ride surcharge on taxi and livery cab rides. Half of the money would go to the MTA, while the other half would be used to finance road and bridge projects upstate and on Long Island, which has been a concern for senate Republicans. "Not only are they expecting taxi drivers and riders to balance the MTA budget, but now on top of that we're supposed to pay for the roads and bridges upstate, this is unbelievable. We feel like complete punching bags of ALbany right now," said Bhairavi Desai of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance.

WCBSTV: NYC Taxi Drivers Demand $1 Fuel Surcharge
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 18:59

New York City taxi cab drivers say soaring gas prices are threatening to drive them out of business, causing many to demand a $1 gas surcharge to be mandated.

Some drivers are saying their cooking pots are empty and their incomes are falling as gas prices continue to rise. They want a surcharge immediately, and additional increases if pump prices continue to go up.

"Why is it that taxi drivers are always treated as second-class citizens?" asked Bhairavi Desai, the Executive Director Taxi Workers Alliance. "Is it because the majority of drivers are people of color? Is it because the majority of drivers are immigrants?"

NYT: No Quick Fuel Surcharge, Taxi Commission Says
Monday, 05 September 2005 18:56

The official agenda said hybrid vehicles and only hybrid vehicles, but the taxi drivers wanted to talk only about towering gasoline prices and why the city must impose a $1 fuel surcharge on fares as soon as possible.

That could be months, however. City regulators told the drivers yesterday that any surcharge would have to be studied by the Taxi and Limousine Commission staff, cleared by its chairman and then go before the public for a comment period.

William Lindauer, 61, a cabdriver who regularly testifies at Taxi and Limousine Commission hearings, compared the commissioners to the Federal Emergency Management Agency after Hurricane Katrina.

"You don't rush in to help?" he said at the packed meeting in a voice that was both a shout and a rasp. "Other cities have a surcharge! Are we so stupid?

NY Sun: Council Members Push Pedal To Add Taxi Fuel Surcharge
Thursday, 24 July 2008 19:04

Fifteen City Council members are calling for taxi fares to be increased, saying they are ready to risk constituents' ire to prevent cabbies from leaving the streets.

Members of a union representing 11,000 taxi drivers, the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, joined the council members yesterday outside City Hall to ask the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission to reconsider its request for a $1-a-ride fuel surcharge to offset rising gas prices. The money would go directly to the drivers, who say they are making at least $1,000 less a month since the last fare hike in 2006 because they are forced to spend more money at the pump.

1010 WINS: NYC Taxi Drivers Seek $1 Surcharge on Meters
Monday, 07 July 2008 00:00

Members of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance say they'll meet Monday at the Manhattan headquarters of the Taxi and Limousine Commission to propose an extra $1 on their meters to offset high gas prices.

But TLC Commissioner and Chairman Matthew W. Daus says: ``Under no circumstances is the TLC considering a gas surcharge.''

Several other U.S. cities have implemented taxi fuel surcharges. Non-regulated industries have raised prices because of higher gas costs.
